While enjoying a romantic getaway in a secluded mountain cabin, Maria and Hans (Leni Riefenstahl and Ernst Petersen) stumble upon a logbook that tells the tragic story of Dr. Johannes Krafft (Gustav Diessl). He lost his wife in an avalanche and roams the slopes of Pitz Palü in search of her frozen body. On the anniversary of her death, Krafft arrives at the cabin, and Maria and Hans decide to accompany him on the next stage of his grim journey. A series of misfortunes leaves the trio stranded on the perilous north face without shelter or provisions. As Johannes's devoted friend (Otto Spring) leads a dramatic torch-lit rescue through the icy glacial caves, Johannes, Maria, and Hans confront the harsh reality that not all of them can survive, and one is destined to die in the White Hell of Pitz Palü.
